Your Introduction to Learning Drums

Hi, I’m Todd. I’ve been drumming since I was a teenager. I started piano when I was 9, then found my way to drums at 13 when a renter in our basement had a kit. I wasn’t allowed to play it, but that made me want to play even more. My mom later bought me my first kit from Sears.

I never had formal drum lessons, so I know what it feels like to struggle, to be unsure, and to figure things out step by step.

That experience shaped my teaching approach in lessons.

Lessons with me are fun, relaxed, and open. I listen to what matters to you, and we build a path that makes sense together.

I’m a Vancouver drum teacher and lifelong musician. I teach private drum lessons in Vancouver and online. If you prefer to learn from home, I offer live online sessions that feel personal and clear.

Drumming has given me confidence, community, and a way to grow as a person. It helps me connect with creativity and keeps me grounded. I love guiding students to find the same joy, whether they’re picking up sticks for the first time or returning after years away.

For me, drumming is the ultimate expressive outlet. If you’re looking for Vancouver drum lessons, I’m here to help.

Start Drum Lessons

I teach kids, teens, young adults, and adults in Vancouver and online.

Kids (5–10)

Many kids are shy when they start. Some have short attention spans or struggle with coordination. Drumming can give them a safe and fun place to build confidence. I use games, songs, and simple rhythms to make learning playful. Kids leave lessons smiling and proud of what they can do. They begin to see themselves as creative and capable. Lessons at this age focus on rhythm, listening, and fun. These are the building blocks of music and growth. Parents often find that drum lessons in Vancouver are one of the most engaging activities their kids can do.

Teens (10–19)

Teen years can be full of self-doubt. Some want to join bands. Others want a way to express themselves. I help teens build skills and find their style. We focus on songs they love, techniques that build confidence, and the tools to perform with others. Drumming becomes a positive outlet and a way to connect with friends. I also help teens prepare for school performances, auditions, and recording if that’s their goal. For teens, lessons with me are a safe place to build identity and community.

Young Adults (19–30)

Some are chasing music careers. Others want to play better with friends, record, or push their skills further. I work with young adults to sharpen technique, prepare for recording, and explore creative expression. Lessons also give space to build connections and confidence in the music community. Whether you’re starting a band, learning to record your own music, or preparing for gigs, lessons are tailored to your next step.

Adults (30+)

Many adults think it’s too late to start. It isn’t. Drumming is a way to rediscover joy, relieve stress, and feel like a kid again. Lessons are at your pace. No pressure. Just a chance to enjoy music, stay active, and grow week by week. I’ve seen adults light up when they realize they can do this. For some, it’s fitness. For others, it’s stress relief. For many, it’s finally picking up something they’ve always wanted to try. If you’re an adult looking for Vancouver drum lessons, this is the right place to start.

How Lessons Work

Getting started is simple:
  • We start with a casual intro chat about your goals and experience, in person in Vancouver or online.
  • We build a foundation of rhythm, timing, and comfort at the kit.
  • We learn through songs you love and styles that inspire you.
  • We explore new skills like fills, dynamics, and improvisation.
  • We track progress together and celebrate each step.

Lessons for All Levels

I teach kids, teens, young adults, and adults in Vancouver and online.

Beginner

We start with the basics: holding sticks, sitting at the kit, and tuning. You’ll learn simple beats, fills, and grooves. My goal is to make the drums feel fun and natural from the first lesson. We’ll play along to songs and build confidence step by step. We also cover fundamentals like posture, practice routines, and how to listen actively while you play. If you’re new and looking for beginner drum lessons in Vancouver, this is a welcoming place to start.

Intermediate

At this stage, we expand your toolbox. You’ll learn new rudiments, dynamic control, and how to improvise. We’ll explore playing in bands, learning covers, and developing your style. You’ll practice with a metronome, work on timing, and build stamina. Many students at this stage begin playing confidently with others.

Advanced

Here we push boundaries. We’ll work on performance skills, recording, and complex techniques like odd time signatures and polyrhythms. You’ll learn how to prepare for gigs, collaborate with other musicians, and refine your own drumming voice. We can also cover studio work, advanced independence, and strategies for stage presence.
