Drum Lesson FAQs

Getting Started

Do I need my own drums to begin?
No. To start, all you need is a pair of drumsticks, a simple metronome app, and a practice pad. If you take in-person lessons, I provide everything you need except sticks — two electronic kits are set up and ready. Over time, getting your own kit at home makes sense as you progress.
What ages do you teach?
I teach kids, teens, young adults, and adults. Each lesson is tailored to age, goals, and experience level.
Are online drum lessons available?
Yes. I teach live online lessons through Zoom at the same rate as in-person lessons. All you need is sticks, a practice pad, and a good internet connection. If you already have an acoustic or electronic kit at home, you can use that too.
Do you offer mobile lessons (in students’ homes)?
No. Lessons are offered in my Vancouver studio or online.

Scheduling & Commitment

How are lessons scheduled?
Weekly lessons are scheduled on an ongoing basis at a recurring time slot. Most students commit to a weekly 30- or 60-minute lesson. Consistency is the key to progress.
Do you offer drop-in lessons?
Yes. Drop-in lessons are available at the standard rate but must be booked weekly and cannot be canceled or rescheduled once confirmed.
What if I miss a lesson or need to cancel?
Please give at least 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule. Without notice, the lesson is charged since the time is reserved for you. Students may cancel up to 3 lessons per year without charge. Emergency cancellations may be considered for rescheduling.
Do lessons run on holidays?
No. Lessons are not held on major holidays (such as Christmas or New Year’s Day). If I’m unavailable, lessons will be rescheduled or refunded.

Payment & Pricing

How much are lessons?

30 minutes: $35
60 minutes: $70
Rates are the same for in-person and online lessons. Group lessons are available on request.

See the Pricing Page for more details.

How do I pay for lessons?

All lessons must be prepaid. For weekly lessons, invoices are sent at the start of the month and billed in advance.

Do you offer group lessons?

Yes. Group lessons are available on request. Please inquire for details.

Materials & Practice

Are sticks required?
Yes. Each student should bring their own sticks. In-person, I provide the kits, but not sticks.
Do you play on electronic or regular drums?
In lessons, I use electronic kits. They let us control the volume and record sessions for review. For online lessons, students can use either electronic or acoustic drums.
What materials do I need?
  • A pair of drumsticks
  • A practice pad
  • A metronome app (many are free)
  • Eventually, a kit for at-home practice
How much should I practice?
Consistency matters more than hours. I’ll create a simple daily or weekly practice plan that fits your goals. Even 15 minutes a day can make a big difference.
How can parents support their child’s practice?
Encourage routine and keep it fun. Remind them to follow the practice plan, celebrate progress, and let them enjoy playing songs they love.

Policies & Other Questions

What’s your attendance policy?

Students are responsible for their scheduled time slot. Cancellations with notice are rescheduled. Students may cancel up to 3 lessons per year without charge.

What happens if I discontinue lessons?

If you choose to stop lessons, no refunds are provided for missed sessions, but you may complete any prepaid lessons. If I am unable to continue teaching, refunds will be issued for unused prepaid lessons.

Is there any risk of injury?

Drumming is low-risk, but students are responsible for their own safety during lessons. I teach proper technique to avoid strain and encourage healthy playing habits.
