About Todd Mumford

A Vancouver-Based Drum Instructor

I am a drum instructor in Vancouver and online. I keep things fun, relaxed, and open. I listen first. Then we build a plan that fits you.

How it started

My Story

I grew up in a home filled with music. I started piano at 9. I practiced every day, but I wanted to play the songs I loved. That spark stayed with me.

At 13 I discovered drums. A renter in our basement had a kit. I was told not to touch it. I was curious and determined. I tried it when I could and I was hooked. My mom later bought me my first kit from Sears. I practiced every day. I built my own practice roadmap. I learned by listening, trying, and repeating.

I never had formal drum lessons. I know what it feels like to be unsure. I know what it takes to build confidence through small wins. That shaped how I teach today.

I started performing with local bands in my teens. I still play with friends I met back then. My brother Jared picked up bass and pushed me to grow. Piano helped me understand melody and harmony. Singing while playing piano helped me sing backups while playing drums. All of that feeds how I teach drummers now.

From 2004 to 2009 I taught drums at Long & McQuade in Surrey. I worked with kids, teens, and adults. I learned how to make lessons clear and practical. I learned how to set goals that fit real life. Teaching became one of the most rewarding parts of my week.

Drumming also helped me through hard times. It gave me a place to focus, breathe, and reset. It gave me a way to connect with people. That is why I teach today. I want students to have that same outlet and growth.

What I Believe

Music is communication. Play what you feel in your heart. Learning should feel safe, clear, and enjoyable. Consistency matters more than perfection. A simple roadmap helps you grow without stress.

That is how I teach. One student at a time. One clear step at a time.

How That Shapes My Teaching

Here is what you can expect when we work together:

  • I listen to your goals and your music tastes
  • We set simple milestones and track wins
  • We learn through songs you enjoy
  • We keep practice realistic and consistent
  • We focus on expression, timing, and feel
I meet you where you are. If you are brand new, we start with the basics. If you have experience, we build on it. We move at a pace that feels right for you.

Values I Bring to Every Lesson

  • Play what you feel in your heart
  • Music is communication
  • Learning should be fun, relaxed, and open
  • Consistency over perfection
  • A roadmap that fits your life

Drum Styles I Teach

I teach private drum lessons in Vancouver and online. I work with kids, teens, young adults, and adults. I teach rock and roll, folk rock, indie rock, pop, blues, jazz, metal, 70s grooves and shuffles, and modern rock. I keep lessons personal and practical. We focus on confidence, expression, and wellness.

Why Learn With Me?

I’m based in Vancouver, and I keep lessons personal, practical, and tied to your goals.

If you’re looking for one-on-one coaching, private lessons give you a different kind of attention than a larger program.

Great drum schools exist, and some are world-class. The difference is that in a private lesson, the focus stays on you for the whole hour, every time.

I also teach video lessons on occasion, and they can be a solid option when schedules or distance get in the way. That said, live lessons let me see what’s happening in real time, catch small issues early, and help you dial in things like timing and feel before they settle in.

With me, lessons are one-on-one and straightforward. The vibe is relaxed, but every session ends with a clear next step, so you know what to practice and why. If you’re starting from scratch, we’ll build strong fundamentals.

If you’re coming back to drumming, we’ll get you playing again without making it feel like a restart. If you prefer online,

I teach live on Zoom with real-time feedback, so you still get responsive coaching and a plan you can follow between lessons.

Real People. Real Results
